World Nursery Rhyme Week - My Favourite Five!

rachelcscarlett

Nursery rhymes play such an important part in a child's learning and development. They can:

- boost vocabulary

- develop speech and language

- help children to develop literacy skills

- provide a fun way to develop numeracy skills

- help develop social and emotional skills

So in the spirit of World Nursery Rhyme Week I have compiled a list of my favourite 5!

  1. Baa Baa Black Sheep An old favourite of mine with fond memories of my grandma singing it (but in Gaelic to add another challenge). A firm childhood favourite dating back to 1744 when the first version was written down! Great for literacy and rhyming.

  2. Three Blind Mice Another traditional favourite - great for numeracy! I basically like any rhyme with animals in!

  3. Tall Shops Maybe not a traditional nursery rhyme but apparently as a child I used to sing this repeatedly driving my parents up the wall! For anybody that doesn't know it - here is a version on youtube (apologies for the quality - it's the only clip I could find!) https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=tall+shops+song&qpvt=tall+shops+song&view=detail&mid=3C3C56D8BF2C19A4FBAC3C3C56D8BF2C19A4FBAC&&FORM=VRDGAR&ru=%2Fvideos%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dtall%2Bshops%2Bsong%26qpvt%3Dtall%2Bshops%2Bsong%26FORM%3DVDRE

  4. Hey Diddle Diddle Another animal related favourite - my Gran knitted me a cow jumping over the moon which hung from my bedroom ceiling as a child so I have very fond memories of this one.

  5. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Maybe one of the most popular of all time.....but there's probably a reason for that! Lovely peaceful bedtime classic:)
